Case 4 (see case reports) and a corre-sponding video (see media) are online now. A patient suffered from a toxoplasma reactivation after a Covid-19 infection and was successfully treated.

The author

Dr. med. Uwe Auf der Strasse completed 7 ½ years of training in general medicine, internal medicine, surgery and natural medicine. Since 2001 he has worked as an established general practitioner in the northern Ruhr district of Germany. In 2017 he wrote a paper containing 27 case reports about his findings concerning chronic active Toxoplasmosis, in 2019 "Das Toxoplasmose Handbuch“ and the english edition "Shadow disease chronic active Toxoplasmosis" were released.

Under the menu item "Media" you will find a link to a report on my work in German TV from February 4, 2019 and a report by Dr. Retzek, a general practitioner from Austria about a patient who suffered from numerous symptoms of chronic active toxoplasmosis for 23 years and who recovered after toxoplasmosis therapy.  The english Version shows subtitles.

5/2021 a report was added about a patient, who suffered from reactivated toxoplasmosis after a Covid-19 infection, she recovered after an appropriate treatment (see also under "Case reports" case 4).

This website focuses on Chronic active Toxoplasmosis and contains passages of the book „Shadow disease Chronic active Toxoplasmosis“. The references to certain chapters, pages or scientific literature refer to this book.  The  book as well as this website have been composed independently and without influence or financial contributions by companies or private persons. Please take note, that the website is desktop optimized; not all of the content can be shown on the mobile version.

Chronic active Toxoplasmosis is far more frequent than hitherto assumed, and in the last 8 years it has absorbed a good deal of my working capacity. I could help approximately 150 patients, who had suffered from this disease. Worldwide, there are between 30 and 60% of the people infected with toxoplasma (64), with some variations. In Germany this rate is 50% (88). Please check for the infection rate in your country.

It is general belief among physicians, that these infections are  causing symptoms only in immunocompromised  persons. This assumption has never been proven, and due to results of basic research (11, 55, 70, 83) and due to my own experience I cannot agree with this point of view. Chronic active Toxoplasmosis can cause multiple symptoms, but these are often rated as „psychosomatic“ or seen as a result of „Fibromyalgia“, or depressive Exhaustion or other – what they are not. If a Chronic active Toxoplasmosis has been diagnosed, it can be well treated by using combinations of standard medication, because this has been known for a long time, and every doctor can familiarize himself with these therapies.

If there should be questions that extend beyond this website or this book, I would like to be contacted via email; in some cases email contact via phone or a letter may be appropriate. Please keep in mind that I am a fulltime working general practitioner, at times it might be difficult to answer to all inquiries.

Chronic active Toxoplasmosis is predominantly caused by Toxoplasma activity within the cysts (in muscular and neuronal tissue) that are established as a result of a primary infection. It has been shown, that the infection with Toxoplasma increases the risk for several diseases (30, 31), increases the risk of traffic accidents and increases the risk for neuronal diseases, even an elevated risk of suicide has been linked to Toxoplasma infection (17, 22, 29, 81, 91). Despite all these severe symptoms medicine still turns a blind eye on these Toxoplasma activity, and they are widely not recognized as a threat to our health.

Many physicians are not aware, that the outer membran of Toxoplasma undergoes a change in structure to a great extend when it transforms into the long lasting cystform (76, 77). For this reason, the usual antibody assays (IgM and IgG), which are designed to identify the Toxoplasma outside the cysts, fail to identify Toxoplasma activity within the cysts (24, 46). Even the otherwise reliable PCR Tests are not sensitive enough (46, 53). Nevertheless it has been proven, that such Toxoplasma activity has the potential to cause severe symptoms (42, 84). The conclusion is that chronic active Toxoplasmosis can cause significant severe symptoms, but as the mentioned lab procedures have never been proven to detect a chronic course of the disease, they obviously can't be used  to securely diagnose or exclude chronic active Toxoplasmosis.

The already mentioned symptoms are accompanied by many more which are listed on a Checklist Toxoplasmosis. This checklist is a result of intensive research on former cases studies and of thorough documentation of cases in my practise and allows a risk assessment. Once the disease has set in, the symptoms usually increase slowly over years, and can culminate in a severe disease, resembling Fibromyalgia, Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) (see 45), or a Chronic Fatigue Syndrom (CFS). Often these symptoms are misinterpreted as “psychosomatic”, because the usual Lab procedures show normal results. The disease can progress at any age. The extent to which the quality of living and the ability of work can be compromised varies; some of my patients were so ill that they could barely manage their daily life.

The listed symptoms enable a risk assessment by revealing a certain symptom pattern.  It can be assumed, that pains and symptoms are perceived differently by people, but each person will realise, if the symptoms improve significantly during a treatment or not.  “0” is always used for free from symptom, up to about “5” for average symptom intensity, up to “10” for a most severe symptom. The checklist cannot be shown in the mobile version. Under "next Steps" you can find a PDF download of the Checklist Toxoplasmosis.
